A lunar lander is a spacecraft that can land on the surface of the moon. This is the spacecraft that separates from the orbiter and heads to the moon for landing. It has astronauts on board. Since there is no air on the moon the engineers will not have to worry about drag and extreme heat. But since there is no air, there will be practically nothing to slow the craft down. Instead the engineers have devised an ingenious idea to fire a rocket on the bottom of the craft at a certain height before landing. The lander will also have a propulsion system that will fly the astronauts back to the orbiter, without which they would be stranded on the moon.
The students will need to build a capsule that can accommodate the eggonaut. The lander needs to have legs to touch down on the surface stably. It needs to have a propulsion system to land it on the surface of the moon. It will also need to have a propulsion system that can house the egonaut while it shoots up from the moon to join the mother ship(a.k.a. orbiter).
